The Ghost of Janet

My own therapy wasn’t significantly different from the work I did with Sara, given that I had experienced a loss as well. I talked extensively about my thoughts and feelings. My therapist, Carol, would often just listen as I poured on about how foolish I was to think I could get Janet to love me the way I wanted her to. And the talking helped. Along with the Zoloft, over the months I began to feel at least a tinge of happiness.

Carol didn’t seem to mind simply being a good listener. Always professionally dressed, she had many of the stereotypical mannerisms of the shrinks that you see depicted in films and on television: She sometimes stroked her chin, said things like “I see,” and “How do you feel about that?,” and would sometimes blow on her tiny eyeglasses, then clean them with a handkerchief before speaking obscure, cryptic words of wisdom with a confidence that they would help me at some point. “Emotional attachment is a complex being, Rob. If it’s not treated as such, it can be all-consuming, leading to both complex grief and depression.”

Carol was big on pseudo free-associating. In other words, she encouraged me to simply say whatever came to mind about Janet and the relationship that I never really had, yet had still somehow lost. Although many therapists see catharsis as an overrated exercise, it still has its place and can be of benefit. Sometimes my thoughts were simple:
